Golden Guardians Hire Jonathon McDaniel As Assistant General Manager, Finalize Coaching Staff, and Academy Team Roster for 2019

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Golden Guardians (GGS), an esports affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, have hired Jonathon McDaniel as assistant general manager, Daniel Morissette as head coach of the Golden Guardians Academy team, and Jimmy Harrison as the two-way player coach, it was announced today. The franchise also completed the five-player Golden Guardians Academy roster for the 2019 Spring Split of the League of Legends Championship Series.

McDaniel will serve as the assistant general manager of the Golden Guardians, working directly under general manager Danan Flander to oversee all aspects of the Golden Guardians Academy team. McDaniel joins the team after two years with Cloud9 in various capacities including team management, coach and analyst. Additionally, McDaniel helped lead various player development and scouting initiatives during his time with Cloud9.

Morissette will be returning as head coach of the Golden Guardians Academy Team after joining the franchise midway through the 2018 Summer Split, serving as Interim LCS Coach for the last two weeks of competition. Prior to coaching the Golden Guardians, Morissette coached Robert Morris University’s League of Legends team for two years while completing his degree at DePaul University. In addition to coaching, Morissette has achieved a solo queue rank of challenger every year since Season 5 and has played on multiple challenger teams throughout the years.

Harrison joins the franchise as the Golden Guardians’ two-way player coach, a new role in professional esports modeled after that of Golden State’s that focuses on the development of Academy players to prepare the team for a transition to the LCS. Last year, he served as Head Coach of e-Sports Club in Brazil's CBLOL, leading the team to consecutive third-place finishes. Harrison began his professional esports career in 2017 as assistant coach of Big Gods Jackals, helping the team to the NACS semifinals. A recent graduate of Miami University in Ohio, Harrison studied kinesiology and athletic training.

The five-player Golden Guardians Academy roster is listed below:

Top: Derek “Zig” Shao

Jungle: Anthony “Hard” Barkhovtsev

Mid: Cristian “Palafox” Palafox

AD Carry: Benjamin “Benji” DeMunck

Support: Jamie “Sheep” Gallagher

Shao, DeMunck and Gallagher return to the Golden Guardians Academy team after competing together in the 2018 Summer Split. Barkhovtsev will make his Golden Guardians debut this spring after leading Team Liquid’s academy team to the 2018 Summer Split semifinals. Palafox joins the Golden Guardians after spending the entire 2018 season with OpTic Gaming Academy.

The Golden Guardians LCS roster, which was announced earlier this month, includes Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell, Juan “Contractz” Garcia, Henrik “Froggen” Hansen, Matthew “Deftly” Chen and Joo-Sun “Olleh” Kim. The team will be coached by Nick “Inero” Smith.

The Golden Guardians are the LCS affiliate team of the Golden State Warriors. League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena game where two teams of five players battle on Summoner’s Rift with the goal of destroying the heart of the opposing team’s base, known as the nexus, to achieve victory.
